To celebrate its new showroom opening in Racine, Milwaukee-based mattress retail and manufacturing franchise Verlo Mattress partnered with the Wisconsin Humane Society for a “Dogtoberfest” contest.
Thanks to some imaginative costume designing, a 100-pound dog and her owner are sleeping in new beds from Verlo Mattress. “Rhode,” a 7-year-old female mastiff mix, took first place in the Halloween costume contest for dogs.
“I saw the contest on Facebook,” said Jennifer Perman, a Kenosha resident and longtime employee of Racine County Courts. “I always make her a costume every year and she doesn’t seem to mind dressing up.”
In past years, Rhode has dressed up as a princess, a deer, a superhero, a biscuit bandit, and a stink bomb.
During “Dogtoberfest,” dog owners submitted photos of their pets in costume on the Verlo Greenfield store Facebook page. Verlo staff determined the winning photo.
“We had 31 entries - 22 dogs and one cat – with several dogs in multiple costumes, but Rhode was the clear winner,” said Dirk Stallmann, president of Verlo. “We’re happy to award Jennifer with a custom-made v3 queen bed and box spring and a new bed for Rhode while also helping the humane society.”
