Walker Furniture Seeking Home for the Holidays Program Recipients

For the 27th year, Las Vegas-based Walker Furniture’s “Home for The Holidays” program is assisting individuals and families in need in Clark County. Walker Furniture is once again seeking nomination letters from the community through Dec. 9, 2020. The search will provide 35 recipients with an entire houseful of new furniture.

“For all of us at Walker Furniture, this is always a special time of the year for giving, and with the pandemic this year hitting our community especially hard even more families are going to need a helping hand,” said Larry Alterwitz, owner. “Our Home for the Holidays program is life altering for many folks who for a myriad of unfortunate circumstances have found themselves in rather desperate need for furniture. We feel it’s the least we can do to lift a burden for 35 families.”

Partnering again this year with Walker, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley is the preliminary committee reading all the letters. Their expertly trained staff visit and identify the nominated families evaluating the most genuine need. Las Vegas Rescue Mission is supplying food and toys, Star Nursery is providing Christmas trees to the families along with support from other vendors and community entities.

The nominating letters describing a person or family’s situation are important to bring attention to an unfortunate situation. Anyone in the community can submit a letter including teachers, health care professionals, social service workers, clergy, friends, neighbors, and family members. Sending letters early is recommended.

Letters explain extraordinary and often heart-wrenching problems in their community, which run the gamut of hardships including: families with children suffering from physical or mental disorders; the loss of homes and belongings from fires; single-parent households with financial difficulty; and families affected by illness, domestic violence or sexual abuse are just some examples.

Letters must be received by Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, to be reviewed by the outside, independent panelists. Helping Hands of Vegas Valley, local nonprofit organization servicing seniors, will read and verify the thousands of letters received. An Executive Committee comprised of Mayor Carolyn Goodman, community leaders, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Clark County Fire Department, and local media personalities will make the final selection for the 35 recipients, who will be notified the week of Dec. 14. Furniture deliveries will begin Friday, Dec. 18.

Letters should be submitted online at WalkerFurnitureHomeForTheHolidays.com.

(Letters can also be mailed or dropped off to Walker Furniture’s MLK store 301 S. Martin Luther King Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89106)

Among its many worthwhile community causes, Home for The Holidays is Walker Furniture’s largest annual charitable endeavor. Since beginning Home for The Holidays in 1994, hundreds of families or individuals have received a houseful of furniture.
