Spring Air Shifts to Mask Production at Northeast Factory

2020 by Laurie Northington in Business Strategy, Industry
Bedding producer Spring Air has transformed its Northeast 300,000-square-foot mattress, box springs and pillow factory into a mask-making operation to help fill the shortage of protective supplies brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The factory has already fulfilled an order for 20,000 masks from Cardi’s Furniture, which in turn donated them to local police departments.
David Nguyen, the owner of the factory, now has his employees cutting and sewing the masks to fulfill orders from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and Gold Medal Bakery in Fall River. The company donated masks to city leaders for distribution as needed. The other masks are being sold.
“Our entire team is honored to be able to shift production from mattresses to make masks that are so desperately needed during this global crisis. As we saw the crisis unfurl, our team looked strategically at how we could make a difference during this time of crisis” Nguyen said. “While we look forward to shifting back to mattress production soon, mask making is our mission for now. I am so proud of our team for the important work they are doing.”
To establish mask making in the factory, Nguyen reached out to his brother in Vietnam, who owns a mattress manufacturing company there, for guidance. His brother’s factory had been making masks and he shared the pattern with Nguyen to help kickstart production.
“The contributions Spring Air licensees are making during this crisis is extraordinary. The leadership companies like U.S. Bedding have embraced the national imperative to serve in a way that makes us so proud and grateful. They are making a difference in the communities they serve,” said Nick Bates, president of Spring Air International.
U.S. Bedding, Nguyen’s factory, joined the Spring Air International licensing network in 2019. Nguyen started the company in 2001 and sells Spring Air products to furniture stores, boutique hotels, design companies and e-commerce retailers throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
