Along with age, income, and marriage/children status, where consumers live helps to determine furniture buying habits.
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2017 Consumer Expenditure Survey, the Northeast region has the highest annual furniture expenditure at $587. Not surprising, considering the majority of larger U.S. urban areas are in the Northeast.
Although the South has the lowest expenditures per household at $470, the region accounts for 38.3% of total furniture spending due to its size, while the Northeast accounts for 17.9% and the Midwest and West both account for 22%.
