Walker Furniture Accepting Nomination Letters for ‘Help For Heroes’ Program

Retailer Walker Furniture has started seeking recommendation letters for the company’s sixth annual “Help for Heroes” program to help wounded U.S. Military personnel and veterans in Clark County who need specialized furniture.

Nomination letters are due by Friday, June 21 and local heroes will be notified the week of June 24.

“Walker Furniture created the ‘Help for Heroes’ program to help make day-to-day living a little easier for a segment of our community that is often overlooked,” said Larry Alterwitz, CEO and owner. “This year the program will provide some relief for 12 active military personnel and/or veterans.”

The “Help for Heroes” program relies on letters from the community describing the situations of prospective recipients. Walker Furniture will provide certain necessary items that are not generally available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, such as lift chairs, adjustable beds, new mattresses, dining sets and a variety of other furniture. Each delivery will be specific to the needs of each recipient.

Letters can be submitted through the following:

Online:  walkerfurniture.com/helpforheroes

Email:   submissions@walkerfurniture.com

Mail or In Person at either Walker Furniture Store Locations:

301 S. Martin Luther King Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89106

671 Marks Street, Henderson, NV 89014

Letters will be reviewed and evaluated by an independent panel headed by Commander Robert Bencsko of the American Legion Paradise Post 149. The post commander and members will personally visit each prospective recipient to evaluate their individual needs. Furniture will be delivered shortly after a special presentation event to be held on Saturday, June 29 at VFW Post 10047.

“We need to remember and acknowledge what these men and women have sacrificed and done for us,” Alterwitz said. “We strive to honor men and women who serve our country, and this is a chance to help and to say Thank You.”

Several local nonprofit organizations have come forward to assist Help for Heroes, including the Las Vegas Rescue Mission, which will give food and other items to recipients if needed, as well as support in many other areas. John Mull’s – Road Kill Grill will partner with Walker Furniture and provide lunch for the veterans and their families at the special event on June 29. A new community partner joining the program this year is Yes Air Conditioning who will provide any air conditioning or plumbing repairs the recipients may need.
