2019 by Laurie Northington in Business Strategy, High Point, Industry, Market
Named for the popular podcast Design Between the Lines hosted by John Conrad, executive director of ISFD, “New School Vs. Old School” is a collaborative educational and networking event featuring an all-star panel of talented product design specialists who will share insights into their personal creative processes, including Catina Roscoe, president of ISFD and founder of Catina Unlimited Design, Aimee Kurzner, director of furniture, Currey & Company, Liz Moore, furniture designer, Otto and Moore, and Christopher Sandomenico, who took home the 2018 Pinnacle for Caracole.
“Long the realm of artists with pencils and sketch pads, our speakers will discuss (and debate) the impact of technology on their work, their inspirations, and how they translate their thoughts to paper, screen and ultimately 3D renderings today,” said Conrad. “We’ll be exploring new ways to think about the creative process in product development, from creating an experiential product that tells a good story, to blowing away the ‘box’ and taking risks, to seeking inspiration from new sources to address difficult design briefs, and most important, encouraging innovation by exploring multiple avenues to solve the same problem. This is an ideal event for any creative, both professionals who are already tackling these issues in their work every day and those who are considering pursuing a creative role in the home furnishings business.”
“Every designer’s habits are idiosyncratic and unique. As one who’s thoughts roam free on paper and who finds it difficult to create on a computer, I’m in the ‘Old School’ camp, but I am really looking forward to what the ‘New Schoolers’ have to say,” said Roscoe, who won the 2018 Pinnacle in the casual dining category. “I’m certain that they find my paper and pencil archaic, slow and messy, but what’s most important is the sharing of ideas and best practices because we all know that great design requires continuous innovation. And we know we can learn from one other.”
The event, which will be followed by Q&A, networking and light refreshments, is free and open to all Market-goers. No R.S.V.P is necessary, but seating is limited. Located at 410 W. English Road, Plant Seven is shuttle stop 27 on the Red Line.
