National Home Builder Reveals 9 Home Design Trends for 2019

A new calendar year brings fresh design trends for homeowners to start incorporating into their homes. With more than 8,000 homes built last year, national homebuilder and Arizona-based developer Taylor Morrison has insight into the design trends buyers are incorporating into their homes. Here are nine trends from the builder's in-house design experts for 2019 based on the selections homebuyers are choosing today.

  1. Healthy homes – Reflecting a shift toward becoming eco-friendlier and bringing healthy lifestyles into the home, the trend includes plants and natural materials like hardwoods raw wood planks and flat finishes.
  2. Low vs. high maintenance – Homeowners are opting for finishes that are easier to maintain.
  3. Fashion forward – Fashion trickles down into home décor and design. Browns and tartan plaids were dominant on the runways in 2018 and will appear in furniture design and accessories as well.
  4. Earth tones – Many homeowners want an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Incorporating earth tones into the home is an easy way to bring the outdoors in.
  5. Monochromatic Mood – High-contract, monochromatic looks are rising in popularity. Dark finishes accented with white or grey will become a popular look.
  6. Pastels and jewel tones – Baby blues, mint greens and blushing pinks will be popular, but bold jewel tones like emerald and sapphire will also be popular.
  7. Unique finishes – Fun hardware finishes like black, rose gold and brass continue to gain popularity. Black will be an important color in 2019.
  8. Flower Power – Floral patterns are a top trend.
  9. Cozy comforts – Inspired by fashion runways, the Danish hygge look (pronounced hoo-guh) is comfortable and relaxed and is replacing stark looks. Think cozy and soft rugs, sofas and beds.
