Fast Fact: Imports, Share of Wood Furniture Drops as Upholstery and Metal Rise

Historically, wood products are the largest material category among furniture imports, but the share of upholstery and metal furniture imports is increasing yearly, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Once 56.6 percent of furniture imports in 2002, wood furniture receded to 38.5 percent of total furniture imports in 2017, while upholstery and metal reached a combined 49.2 percent.

Although it is the smallest imported product category, bedding has catapulted since 2002 – increasing over 2,000 percent. Reaching $1 billion in 2017, imports of mattresses have grown 51.8 percent in just a year.
