Supreme Court Rules Online Retailers Can Be Required to Collect Sales Tax

A 5-to-4 ruling handed down by the Supreme Court today states that online retailers can be required to collect sales tax, even if they have no physical, brick-and-mortar presence in the state.
Since the 1992 Quill Corporation vs. North Dakota ruling, which said businesses collecting taxes without a substantial connection to a state is barred by the Constitution, states have said they’re losing annual revenue dollars and businesses with a brick-and-mortar presence have cited the unfairness of having to charge sales tax while their online competition does not.
