Big America, Population Density and Immigration in Big Counties

Over 50 percent of residents live in just 143 counties (Big America) with the remaining half spread out over 2,999 counties (Small America) to the according to the 2016 Population Estimates Report done by the U.S. Census Bureau.

In terms of population density, the Northeast contains the most congestion of people. New York County (New York City) has almost 72,000 people per square mile living in the county, compared to 2,500 in Los Angeles County, the largest county in population in the United States.

With immigration representing roughly 45 percent of population growth, big counties were the major recipients—adding 74.1 percent of immigrants to the already highly populated areas.
