Some Production to Resume Tuesday at American Furniture

Production will resume Tuesday in some portions of the American Furniture Mfg. plant in Ecru, Miss., that was heavily damaged by fire on Friday.

American Furniture President Randy Spak said most of the company’s finished goods were destroyed, but most raw materials and production areas were spared, which is enabling the company to resume production sooner than anticipated.

Spak said Plant 2, which produces motion furniture and recliners, will resume production Tuesday, and he asked all production employees from that plant to report for work at their normal times.

He said it’s still not clear when stationary upholstery production will resume, but “we’re moving toward normal production faster than anticipated.”

The fire broke out about 7 a.m. in the warehouse, and thick, black smoke from the blaze was visible more than 20 miles away at the Tupelo Furniture Market, which ended Sunday. Spak was at American’s Tupelo showroom when he received word of the fire.

No injuries were reported.
