Ikea Issues Another Recall of Chests, Dressers After 8th Tip-Over Death

Retail giant Ikea has issued a second recall of its Malm children’s and adult chests and dressers following the eighth reported death of a child who became trapped when a chest tipped over.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the most recent death occurred in May, when a 2-year-old boy was trapped beneath an unanchored Malm 3-drawer chest.
Other deaths involving Malm dressers and chests have been reported as far back as 2011, and deaths involving other models of Ikea chests and dressers date back to 1989, the CPSC said.
The agency said Ikea has received 186 reports of tip-over incidents involving Malm chests and dressers, including 91 reports of injuries to children.
The CPSC said consumers should stop using the recalled furniture immediately if it is not properly anchored to a wall, and move it to an area that’s not accessible to children. Ikea will provide a refund or free wall-anchoring kit.
The retailer also will pick up the recalled items or install the anchoring kit at no charge.
Ikea estimates that 17.3 million 3-drawer, 4-drawer, 5-drawer and 6-drawer Malm models were sold in the U.S. between January 2002 and June 2016, when the first recall was issued.
Consumers who purchased certain models manufactured prior to 2002 are eligible for a partial store credit.
The recalled models do not meet the voluntary industry tip-over standard, ASTM F2057-14, the CPSC said.
