Williams-Sonoma to Expand N.C. Upholstery Plant

Williams Sonoma LogoSutter Street Manufacturing, the upholstery manufacturing arm of retailer Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM) is expanding its factory in Claremont, N.C., as part of a $1.9 million upgrade of its facility.

The company said the expansion will add 72 jobs over the next three years, boosting employment to approximately 650.

“Ten years ago, we decided to invest in North Carolina and Catawba County because of the vast pool of skilled furniture craftsmen and women. Our talented associates are second to none and critical to the success of our organization,” said Darryl Webster, vice president of Sutter Street. “North Carolina and Catawba County have been valuable business partners working hand in hand with us to drive success. We are excited about our growth and look forward to continuing our partnership.”

The factory produces upholstered furniture for several Williams-Sonoma brands, notably Pottery Barn, West Elm and Williams-Sonoma Home.

A performance-based grant of $300,000 from the One North Carolina Fund is helping to facilitate the expansion. State officials said the money won’t be paid upfront, but will be disbursed as job creation and capital investment targets are met. The grant also requires a matching grant from local governments.

“North Carolina is home to some of the most skilled furniture talent in the world,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said in a statement announcing the expansion. “It’s that talent that keeps furniture manufacturers here, and this expansion is a testament to the health of the furniture industry in North Carolina.”
