Serta Simmons Bedding confirmed Monday that its new headquarters will be built in the Atlanta suburb of Doraville, Ga., where the mattress producer will be one of the anchor tenants of a mixed-use project called Assembly that is being developed on the site of a former General Motors assembly plant.
The 210,000-square-foot facility will be home to more than 500 employees of SSB and its Serta and Simmons Beautyrest brands who currently work at four facilities in the Atlanta and Chicago areas.
The new headquarters, which will occupy about five acres, is scheduled to open in early 2019. It will feature an Innovation Center and multi-brand showrooms.
SSB officials said Serta and Beautyrest will each have their own distinct spaces on the campus to maintain brand differentiation.
"Co-locating SSB's headquarters and our brands on the same campus is an investment in our employees and our company as we continue to expand and strengthen our market leadership," said Michael Traub, SSB CEO. "An integrated and unified work environment that will foster better collaboration, innovation and teamwork, will better support our growth trajectory. This is what our new location will deliver."
Currently, about 120 employees work at the Serta headquarters in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and another 200 are at the Simmons headquarters in the Concourse office park in Atlanta. In addition, about 75 people are at an existing research and development facility in the Atlanta area, and about 125 work at the SSB corporate headquarters in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood.
"We are delighted to welcome Serta Simmons Bedding to Assembly and the Doraville community," said Doraville Mayor Donna Pittman. "We appreciate their confidence and investment, and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership."
The former GM site is northwest of downtown Atlanta near I-285 and is bisected by a Norfolk & Western rail line. It’s also adjacent to the Doraville MARTA rapid transit station, and developers say much of the site is within walking distance of the station.
