Dudley Moore Sr. Dies at 85

William Dudley Moore Sr. Longtime furniture designer William Dudley Moore Sr. died at Hospice Home in High Point on July 10. He was 85.

Moore witnessed changes to the industry he served and passed his talent on to his children, grandchildren and many others during the course of his life.

Born April 2, 1931, in North Wilkesboro, N.C., to Roy Ivey Moore and Freda Hendren Moore, he was also the grandson of James D. Moore, founder of Home Chair Company of North Wilkesboro.He graduated from Wilkes High School and N.C. State University and also served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married Norma Bell in August 1955 and was married to her for 56 years.

After graduating from N.C. State with a degree in furniture manufacturing and management in 1957, he began his career with the design firm of Gordon Perlmutter in New Jersey.

In 1960, along with Walter Otto, he formed the company that became Otto & Moore furniture designers. Its list of clients over the years included Vaughan-Bassett, Riverside Furniture, Universal, Hammary, Stanley, Pulaski, Bassett, Bernhardt, Lexington, Lane, Brunswick Billiards and others.

Moore also helped guide and train many industry designers, including his son Dudley Moore Jr., his daughter Carolyn Moore Shaw, and grandchildren Will and Elizabeth Moore. He is survived by a son and two daughters, two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 13 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in High Point. The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. today, July 12 in the Asbury Room of the church.
