ABC Carpet & Home is closing its Bronx warehouse, a destination for shoppers seeking bargains from the luxury home goods retailer for three decades.
It is also laying off 78 people, according to a Warn notice filed with the state Department of Labor, which indicates that 65 people will be impacted at the warehouse and another 13 affected in a Home Furnishings division at the same location.
According to a report in the New York Post, The 119-year-old company, which plans to close the warehouse sometime in September, said it was no longer “strategically viable” to operate the 250,000-square-foot Bronx warehouse, and the company “is confident this realignment will serve the company’s strategic growth,”
Owned by the Weinrib family, the fourth-generation family retailer, which attracts about a million visitors annually and generates $150 million in sales, will still offer rug, carpet and broadloom clearance merchandise on the lower level of the company’s flagship store at 881 Broadway in the Flatiron District, and it will do seasonal pop-ups within the store to offer clearance furniture, bed and bath and lighting, the company said.
