Ray Batts, ‘The Furniture Man’, Dies

Ray Batts, former furniture retailer known as The Furniture Man in Nashville, Tenn., for years, has died. He was 90.

Born in Cheatham County, Tenn., Batts was a furniture retailer for nearly 40 years. He owned five furniture stores in Middle, Tenn., and two La-Z-Boy branded stores. In addition to his bigger than life persona in the furniture industry, Batts was part of a country music band and recorded a number of records, including “Stealin’ Sugar” and “Wild Man Boogie”. 

In addition to his wife Mildred Batts, he was preceded in death by two sons and a daughter. He is survived by a daughter Debra Batts Smythia and her husband David Smythia and several grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held today at 11:30 at Woodlawn Roesch-Patton-Funeral Home in Nashville, Tenn.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Guardian Hospice of Nashville, 741 Cool Springs Boulevard Suite 102, Franklin, Tenn., 37067.
