Hassell Franklin Featured in Series on Entrepreneurs
Hassell Franklin, chairman and CEO of motion upholstery supplier Franklin Corp., has been featured in a news series that spotlights Mississippi entrepreneurs.
Eleven-year-old Hassell Franklin sat in front of Elvis Presley in the sixth grade in Tupelo, Miss.
“Elvis wasn’t like other kids,” said Franklin, chairman and CEO of Franklin Corp., one of the largest privately owned furniture manufacturers in the United States. “While we played ball during recess, Elvis would sit on the school steps and play his guitar.”
Like Elvis, Franklin knows something about drive. He operated a watermelon stand during the summers in front of the family’s home on a small farm north of Tupelo. “My dad would mark 45 or 55 cents on a watermelon,” Franklin said, “I’d change the price to 75 cents.”
Franklin said the transition from farm boy to entrepreneur defined him.
