Marlo Furniture Holders Use Land for other Uses
July 30,
2014 by in Business Strategy, Industry
Marlo Furniture's extensive current and former land holdings in the Washington, D.C., area at Route 50 and Lee Road have been developed with two restaurants, a hotel, a Target and a Costco.
What there is not, and apparently never will be, is a furniture store there.
Eleven years after Marlo — acquired by Brandywine, Maryland-based Regency Furniture in 2012 — rezoned roughly 14 Chantilly acres for a 67,500-square-foot furniture store, economic reality has set in. The furniture pitch has been tossed aside in favor of other development, likely additional retail.
"Since that time, there’s been a decline in the national and local furniture market and construction of the furniture store is not economically viable," Fairfax Supervisor Michael Frey, R-Sully, said Tuesday as he initiated a Comprehensive Plan amendment to clear the way for other options.
Regency executives did not return requests for comment. The land is owned by Chantilly 50-28 Associates Limited Partnership, which shares an address with Marlo's Alexandria store.
