Stan Adelstein Dies

Stan Adelstein, former chairman and founding partner of Bob's Discount Furniture, has died. He was 78.

Adelstein worked with Manchester, Conn.-based Bob's for more than two decades, and he served as CEO of the chain from 2005-2006. Adelstein was chairman from 2006 until 2013.

He joined Bob's as a consultant shortly after the retailer opened in 1991. At that time, he became one of the original partners.

During Adelstein's tenure with the company, Bob's grew from a single store with a small staff to 51 stores with more than 3,000 employees in nine East Coast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Adelstein began his career in the Boston area working for his father in a family owned furniture store. Eventually, he moved to Connecticut and brought his expertise to Bob’s, where as one of the original partners, he created a unique business model in the furniture industry. The model, based on honesty, value and integrity, and an everyday low price, was unheard of at that time in the furniture business.

"All of us at Bob’s owe a great deal to Stan whose vision, drive and passion have helped form our culture and spawn the 'Bob’s Way'," said Ted English, Bob's CEO, in a statement. "Please keep the Adelstein family in your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time, and let’s all honor Stan and keep his legacy alive by continuing to exemplify his commitment to honesty, value and integrity and by giving back and celebrating our families."

Adelstein's passion for creative advertising, merchandising and market strategy never wavered over his more than 20 years with Bob’s.

In addition to his passion and drive in leading Bob’s, Adelstein was active in giving back to the community and created a partnership with the American Red Cross and Bob's.

"As a board member, blood donor and friend to all, Stan was unwavering in his passion for our humanitarian mission and undoubtedly helped to save thousands of patients’ lives through his commitment to the American Red Cross over the past decade," said Donna M. Morrissey, director of national partnerships, America Red Cross Biomedical Services. “Stan will forever be remembered by his legacy to compassionately serve the community and his steadfast generosity for those in need."

Adelstein is survived by his wife Donna, sons Eric, Richie, Ray and Spenser, daughter Bonnie and step-son Sean Lanagan and five grandchildren. Remembrance details will follow.
