Johnson Bros. Furniture has turned a retirement sale into a closing sale, the Duluth News Tribune reported Monday.
Johnson Bros. Furniture, which has stores in Duluth, Cloquet and Superior, had advertised the sale as a retirement event for President Larry Johnson's father. Plans to sell the business fell through, though, which led the retailer to convert to a going-out-of-business sale.
"There was going to be someone to take it over," Johnson said in the report. "Someone else was going to buy it, but that's not going to happen now."
The Duluth closure leaves two stores--Anderson Furniture Co. and Robert's Home Furnishings--in the city's furniture retail hub, which once boasted seven stores.

Home furnishings specialty transporter Furniture Transport Group has named Louis Massood executive vice president, sales.
The move is part of a major reorganization underway at Lenoir, N.C.-based Furniture Transport Group, led by president and chief executive officer, Steven Lusty, who assumed his new role early last month.
Previously, Massood was executive vice president of sales for MGM Transport. In his new role, he will lead the sales effort for the entire company, which was formed by the merger of MGM Transport Corp., Caldwell Freight Lines, Foothills Trucking Co. and Lance Transport to create one powerful, national transportation firm. He began his career at MGM Transport in 1989 as a night dispatcher.
"Louis Massood played an integral part over the years in the growth of MGM Transport Corp., and I believe his considerable knowledge and unerring dedication to our customers will be a key driver in growing our business at Furniture Transport Group as we move forward," Lusty said.
"Over the years, I've seen the company grow from a family-owned, regional trucking company for the furniture industry into a national concern offering the type of value-added services that a smaller regional company could not possibly provide," Massood said.
Those services include warehousing, truckload and consolidation services, expedited LTL service, as well as brokerage and nationwide home delivery.
"As we move forward, we will be providing pick-up service, not only domestically, but internationally from Asia, where so much of the furniture is manufactured today," he said. "We will then deliver it anywhere within the 48 contiguous states on one of our lines."
According to Furniture Transport Group, the company is the largest specialty transporter of home furnishings in the United States, utilizing state-of-the-art online and tracking technology, LTL and deconsolidation, dual coast warehouse and distribution facilities, light assembly capabilities, home delivery and best customer service practices.

Wood bedroom furniture from China received a preliminary duty of 216.01 percent in a U.S. Department of Commerce administrative review of 2009 shipments.
Twenty-eight manufacturers received a separate preliminary duty rate of 16.24 percent as they were deemed to have sufficient freedom from government control to escape the People's Republic-wide 216 percent rate.
