Southerland, Allergy Technologies Take the Fight to Bed Bugs

By Home Furnishings Business in Bedding on April 26, 2011

Bedding vendor Southerland and Allergy Technologies have introduced what they call the first mattress and foundation system to eliminate bed bugs and dust mites.

Southerland offers the new system as an option on its upper-end mattresses and foundations. It is available for sale to hotels, universities and apartments through Southerland's contract division; and will be available as a premium option at retail stores late this Spring.

The patent-pending Southerland Total Protection Sleep System uses Allergy Technologies' proprietary ActiveGuard mattress liner technology to kill bed bugs and dust mites upon contact. The ActiveGuard fabric used on the Total Protection system is EPA-registered; and not only kills new bed bugs, but provides protection beyond the typical bed bug life cycle.

"Bed bugs and dust mites pose serious concerns and health issues, and our increasingly mobile lifestyles have made the threat of infestation even greater than ever," said Southerland President David Corbin. "The Southerland Total Protection Sleep System is one of the most proactive and effective steps consumers can take to conveniently prevent the infestation of bed bugs or dust mites in their bedding."

The new system does not involve airborne sprays or powders, and offers protection without further maintenance. The fabric is soft, breathable and odorless.

Southerland's Total Protection Sleep System is an "exceptional preventive tool" in fighting bed bugs said Joseph Latino, director of sales and marketing for Allergy Technologies.

"Coupling the Total Protection Sleep System with ActiveGuard mattress liners represents the most formidable pro-active bed bug product offering available in the industry," he said.

Lone Star Baby & Kids to Close 2 Stores

By Home Furnishings Business in Retail Closings on April 26, 2011 Texas youth furniture and accessories retailer Lone Star Baby & Kids will close two stores and consolidate operations at its flagship store in Frisco.

This summer, Lone Star is closing its Dallas and North Richland Hills stores.

"The reason for closing our Dallas and North Richland Hills locations is two-fold," said Lone Star Baby & Kids President Michael Schaul. "The economic conditions over the past few years have had a direct impact on our business; and with our leases expiring, we felt the timing was right to consolidate with our Flagship store."

The consolidation process and liquidation sale is being managed by Profit Management Promotions(http://www.pmpsales.com/) of Jamison, Pa.

"With the expiration of store leases, Lone Star realized the benefit of consolidating locations. Their plan is to regroup, retrench and enhance customer services and product selection at their flagship store," said Ron Cooper of PMP. "We feel they are moving in the right direction and look forward to their impending success at their flagship location."

The Lone Star Baby liquidation sale starts April 28, and runs through the end of June, with more than $3 million in inventory on sale. Both stores will close permanently by mid-summer.
