Star Furniture Opens in Clear Lake

Star Furniture opened a new furniture store Wednesday in Clear Lake, Texas.

Star, which has six showrooms in Houston and one each in Austin, San Antonio and Bryan, celebrated the opening with an invitation-only event for preferred customers.

Patrons at the 76,000-square-foot store had an opportunity to shop the Grand Opening sale before the general public.

In addition to the Grand Opening Sale prices, Preferred Customers were also invited to save even more during the evening celebration while helping local charities. For a $20 donation to the United Way of Greater Houston, they received a voucher for an extra 20 percent off Grand Opening prices.

Celia Moh Scholarship Taps 9

Nine new students have been selected to receive the prestigious Celia Moh Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

This year's recipients are: Anne Beuker, High Point University; Jacob Blok, Kendall College of Art and Design; Ethan Creasman, Appalachian State University; Jennifer Gates, Mississippi State University; Haley Haverstock, Mississippi State University; Justine Nicholson, North Carolina State University; Dana Skelton, North Carolina State University; Daniel Unites, North Carolina State University; and Meaghan Wade, High Point University.
 
The Celia Moh Scholarship for students bound for careers in the home furnishings industry pays full-time tuition and fees, room, board and books for its recipients. In addition, the scholarship hosts an annual networking and resource-building trip to the High Point Furniture Market(http://highpointmarket.org), and provides informal internship and career guidance for its scholars, as well as offering an active alumni network for former scholars who are now in the home furnishings industry.
 
Established in 2001 by furniture industry entrepreneur Laurence Moh, best known as the founder of Universal Furniture and later, Fine Furniture Design, to honor his wife, Celia, the program€™s strategically managed $3 million endowment investment has provided 65 full scholarships in 10 years.

Surya Offers Tornado Victims Discount

Rug vendor Surya is offering a 25 percent discount on any Surya damaged or destroyed during the tornados that ravaged seven southern states two weeks ago.

This offer is valid for all customers in the home furnishings industry who were effected by the tornado. The tornado killed more than 300 people, and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes. The damages have been estimated by insurance adjusters upwards of $5 billion dollars.

"The impact this tornado has had in many southern communities is devastating," said Satya Tiwari, president of Surya.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families. We want to participate in the rebuilding process so everyone can get their lives back to normal as soon as possible."

High Point Hopeful on Showroom Deal's Impact

The doomsday economic scenario that some in the city feared since word surfaced months ago of a monumental deal involving the High Point Market didn't come to pass this week.

The High Point Enterprise has reported since earlier this year on a deal that would bring the three main High Point Market showrooms and the World Market Center in Las Vegas under one ownership.

Some High Pointers had expressed fears privately and publicly that such a deal could lead to the erosion or elimination of the city and stateâs single-largest economic event.

Couple Says Aaron's Spied

A major furniture rental chain has software on its computers that lets it track the keystrokes, screenshots and even webcam images of customers while they use the devices at home, according to a lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Wyoming couple who said they learned about the PC Rental Agent "device and/or software" inside the computer they rented last year when an Aaron's Inc. store manager in Casper went to their home on Dec. 22.
