Home furnishings and womenswear retailer Laura Ashley has today revealed that total UK sales in the 17 weeks to May 28th were down 4.5 per cent year-on-year. In an interim management statement the company said that the trading slump is largely due to the store realignment programme it undertook in the last financial year, A1618|which resulted in 16 outlets closing down. Pier 1 Imports Inc. said Thursday that revenue at stores open at least a year rose 10.2 percent in the first quarter, helped by better traffic, more purchases being made and a higher average receipt. The home dcor retailer also gave a first-quarter earnings forecast above Wall Street's expectations. Pier 1 said it had a 14.3 percent increase in revenue at stores open at least a year in the year-ago period. Revenue at stores open at least a year is a key gauge of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores opened or closed during the year.

Rob Killgore has been named chief operating officer for bedding retailer
Sleep Train.
Formerly executive vice president, Killgore is responsible for strategic planning and daily operations of the Sacremento, Calif.-based retailer. Killgore joined the company 25 years ago as a part-time delivery driver while he was attending college.
In addition to Killgore's appointment, the company has named Diane Hanratty director of human resources; Brett Thonrton director of training and development; Mark Tseu vice president of information technology; Gina Davis director of branding; Hernani Alves enterprise vice president of retail sales; Matt Jessell vice president of alternative channel sales; Darin Edwards director of operations training, and Mike Lavelle enterprise vice president of strategic plan execution.
Additionally, Sleep Train announced a number of regional leadership promotions, including Scott Higgins as the regional vice president of Southern California sales; Brian Fifield as the regional vice president of Northern California sales; Scott Murphy as the regional vice president of California operations; Mike Estes as the regional vice president of Pacific Northwest sales; and Bob Young as the regional vice president of Pacific Northwest operations.

The International Casual Furnishings Association has announced finalists for the 2011 Apollo Awards. The program recognizes retail excellence in the sales and marketing of outdoor furnishings.
Finalists must demonstrate outstanding accomplishments and commitment to customer service. The ICFA membership will vote via an online ballot for a winner in each category this summer. Finalists will be honored and the winners announced at a gala awards banquet on Sept. 14, during the International Casual Furniture & Accessories Market in Chicago. The ICFA and MMPI are co-sponsors of the event, which will be held at Chicagos Field Museum. MMPI owns and operates the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, which hosts the Casual Market.

Furnitureland South has donated $14,000 worth of home furnishings and accessories to the "Designers Care" annual fundraiser by Triad Health Project, according to an announcement from the retailer.
