PIERS: Feb. Container Imports Down 5.8%

By Home Furnishings Business in sourcing/importing on April 4, 2012

An early lunar New Year holiday led to a 5.8 percent February drop in U.S. containerized imports in February, according to the Journal of Commerce.

February marked the first decline in four months on a year-over-year basis, and was off 18.6 percent from January to 1,193,157 20-foot-equivalent units as demand for furniture, toys and footwear declined on early closing of factories in China for the lunar New Year and soft consumer spending.

While the timing of the Lunar New Year holiday, and related factory closings, made accurate year-over-year comparisons difficult, the 18.6 percent tumble from January suggests weakening volume, said Mario O. Moreno, economist for The Journal of Commerce/PIERS. Prior to the slide, furniture, the largest import commodity group, had been leading an import surge.

February imports from Asia tumbled 10 percent year over year, after a 3 percent increase in January. Moreno noted that his first quarter forecast of 1 percent growth in trade from Asia might be a bit optimistic.

"Overall demand for imported home goods remains relatively modest as the pace of home sales recovers at a stubbornly slow manner," Moreno said. "Meanwhile, consumer spending rose faster than incomes in February, mainly at the expense of savings, which raises a concern for the sustainability of spending in the long run."

Codarus Debuts in High Point

By Home Furnishings Business in High Point on April 4, 2012

Manufacturers' representative group Codarus will at the High Point Furniture Market this month in Space H223 of the International Home Furnishings Center.

The company, based in Dallas, is showing seven lines of home textiles, accent furniture and accessories in its new 3,500-square-foot showroom--Lili Alessandra, Bella Notte and Peacock Alley, luxury linens; Square Feathers, decorative pillows and lamp shades; Moss Studio, made-in-America upholstery; Journey Trading, occasional furniture and accessories; and Anali, embroidered sheets and decorative pillows. Most of the sources have never shown in High Point.

"A group of the vendors that we represent in our showrooms in Dallas and Atlanta requested that we open a showroom in High Point," said Cody Hutcheson, principal owner along with his partner, Dave Bugbee. "In recent years, High Point has evolved from a furniture show to a 'total home' show, with a greater range of other products such as top-of-bed and accessories. At market, we'll have a very 'soft' presentation, with 14 to 15 different luxury, fashion-forward bedding ensembles on display."

Codarus is "really excited" about coming to High Point, Hutcheson added. Market officials have been "very supportive in getting us what we need in terms of space, location and presence. With the economy starting to come back, we€™re expecting to have a strong market."

Hutcheson said High Point will be a particularly good platform for Codarus to expand its business outside the United States: "It€™s a great market for international buyers."

Codarus' target customers include mid- to high-end furniture stores, bedding specialists and designers.
