N.C. Legislation Puts Emphasis on Homefront Companies

Legislation working its way through the N.C. General Assembly would make it easier for furniture companies with a base in or tie to North Carolina to do business with state government, supporters of the legislation say.

House Bill 449 would change the state law that governs requirements for businesses to contract with the state to supply furnishings. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Edgar Starnes, R-Catawba, would further clarify the requirements that potential vendors must meet to bid on state furniture contracts.

Art Van Furniture Expands into Chicago Market

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn set the tone at a press event announcing Art Van Furniture's expansion into the Chicago market with its planned retail and distribution locations that will bring about 600 jobs to the area.

The announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to drive Illinois economy forward and create jobs. He was joined by Art Van Elslander, founder and chairman of Art Van Furniture, to make the announcement at the future store location in Lincoln Park.

Thos. Moser Furniture Chosen for Bush Library

For years, Aaron Moser wanted to see his family's furniture decorate a presidential library.

He'd come close. Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers did some work for the Ronald Reagan library in California, though it wasn't big - mostly public benches, public seating and occasional furniture. The Auburn company hand-crafted a podium for President Bill Clinton during his presidency. And when President George W. Bush welcomed Pope Benedict XVI to the White House in 2008, the men sat in Thos. Moser's signature Harpswell chairs.

Martin Roberts Design Completes Swann's Furniture

Martin Roberts Design has completed the new $4.4 million flagship store for Swann's Furniture & Design in Tyler, Texas.

The project encompassed developing the architectural concept, signage, and interior design for the new, 51,000 square-feet store. Special emphasis was laid on increasing the store's visibility in the community, emphasising the professional decorating services, and ensuring the consistency of the shopping experience between the retailer's new website and physical store.

The initial design brief was to address the changed character of the neighborhood where the original store and warehouse were located.

U.S. Consumers Less Positive on Economic Concerns

U.S. consumer sentiment eased in April as Americans remained concerned about their employment and financial prospects, a survey released on Friday showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment fell to 76.4 from 78.6 in March, although it topped economists'expectations for 73.2.
