Furniture giant IKEA has asked for help from anyone with information regarding a 1987 agreement between government enterprises in Cuba and the former East Germany to manufacture furniture in Cuban prison workshops for the Swedish firm.
A telephone hotline has been established in Germany for people ?who want to contribute to clarifying the production conditions among our suppliers? in the former communist-ruled German Democratic Republic, said an IKEA announcement Monday.

A massive fire broke out at a furniture warehouse in Bakersfield, Calif., Tuesday morning. Firefighters responded to the three-alarm fire at Home Decor Furniture Store and Warehouse on Union Avenue near Monterey Street just after 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Bakersfield City Fire Battalion Chief Ross Kelly said the building was too hot for firefighters to fight the blaze from the inside. Firefighters used ladder trucks to position hoses and work to extinguish the flames.

The N.C. General Assembly appears to have held steady on funding for the High Point Market in the $20.2 billion state budget approved last week, though not increasing support back to levels before the impact of the Great Recession.
Advocates for the furniture market were trying to drill down into the massive budget document Thursday afternoon to detail the appropriations for the worlds largest home furnishings trade show. But it appears that total market funding remains at about $1.6 million.
