Orient Express Furniture Taps Cubberley for New Post

By Home Furnishings Business in Executive Changes on July 9, 2010 Industry veteran Bill Cubberley has been named director of business development for furniture importer Orient Express Furniture, a division of Star International Furniture. The position is new for the company.

Cubberley has held sales and marketing positions in the furniture industry for more than 30 years and was senior vice president, sales and marketing for Stanley Furniture for more than 15 years. Most recently, he was a consultant for A-America and Orleans International.

Cubberley reports to Anders Johnson, president of Star, and he will act as a consultant in matters relating to the company. He will also work for Christian Cousins, director of sales and product development at Orient Express, to develop a sales and distribution plan for the division.

€œBill€™s experience in the industry is a valuable addition to our team,€ Johnson said. €œI look forward to uncovering the opportunities his insight has to offer.€

Cubberley will be based in High Point.

Bob's Discount Furniture Manager Injured in Robbery

The manager of Bob's Disount Furniture in Woodbridge, N.J., was wounded in the foot after being shot by a man who robbed the furniture store, the Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.

After stealing the store's cash, the robber left the store and fired another shot while attempting to steal a car.

A mall security officer then struggled with the robber, but the suspect stole the officer's security car. Police have recovered the robber's gun, some of the cash taken and the security car.

Arson Suspected in Minn. Furniture Store Fire

Police and fire officials are investigating foul play in a Tuesday night fire that spread to Adams Interiors in Elk River, Minn., KSTP reported Wednesday.

More than 55 firefighters responded to the blaze, which police said began after youths set portable toilets near the store on fire. A full investigation is underway.

Some firefighters suffered heat exhaustion, but no one had to leave the scene for medical care.

Former Furniture Store Owner Wins Negligence Suit

A Portland, Me., jury has awarded $7.3 million to a the owner of a former furniture store in a verdict against his former attorney for negligence in a case connected to now-defunct Northern Mattress & Furniture Co., the Morning Sentinel reported Wednesday.

A jury already had ruled that the firm of Bernstein Shur Sawyer & Nelson was negligent in its representation of Peter Redman in a workplace sexual harrassment matter. Redman, who was company president, had been prohibited from entering the family business€™ Fairfield headquarters because of a sexual harassment claim that he contends was orchestrated by his late brother, Mark Redman, to take over business. The matter was settled internally.

Northern Mattress went out of business in late 2006, and mark Mark Redman committed suicide in 2006.

Peter Redman has since started a new business, Priceless Mattress and Furniture in Augusta.

Bernstein Shur Sawyer & Nelson will move for a new trial. If that's not approved, the firm will appeal the verdict to the Maine Supreme Court.

Furniture First Taps MicroD for Web Development

Furniture First said it was attracted to MicroD's expertise in consumer Web site design, product catalog management, draping, room planner and search engine optimization.

MicroD began work with Furniture First members July 1 to build, service and host Web site and e-mail accounts. Furniture First's corporate office will also use MicroD's ePiphany platform to create private label Web sites.
 
Features for the private label Web sites will include a room planner, ePreVue catalogs, a dealer locator and Furniture First design articles. The Supplier Partner private label sites will be: Craftmaster, Klaussner, HTL Furniture, Serta and Southern Motion.
 
Over the course of the agreement, Furniture First and MicroD, Inc. aim to provide a consumer Web site to help members grow their businesses with new technology and sales trends.
 
Furniture First is a $1.35 billion full line home furnishings and mattresses only buying cooperative representing 177 independent home furnishings retailers from medium-low to medium-high end quality products across the United States.
