Smith Village Home Furnishings Supports Habitat

Jacobus, Pa., retailer Smith Village Home Furnishings is partnering with York Habitat for Humanity to construct a handicap-accessible home for a local family.

Members of the Smith family donated a building lot about a block from their main store, and are encouraging community members and local organizations to get involved by volunteering their time or by donating money or building materials.

York Habitat for Humanity is constructing a handicap-accessible home for the family of Laurie Hanline. Her 13-year-old son, Allen, is mentally and physically disabled. Current living conditions are a constant struggle for the entire family. The new home, located on Meadow Street in Jacobus, will allow Allen full mobility.

“Smith Village Home Furnishings is proud to be a part of the Jacobus community and this amazing build,” said Dallas Smith, president of Smith Village Home Furnishings. “We’re honored to be helping Laurie Hanline and her family. Several Smith Village employees volunteered on another York Habitat project in December 2012, and some will also help on this project.”

Groundbreaking took place Sept. 7. The house foundation was completed with an all-volunteer workforce of experienced masons the week of Sept. 23, 2013. More construction took place Oct. 8-11, 2013. Dedication of the completed house will take place in March.

To help raise funds for this project, Smith Village is running a special sale Oct. 3-20, 2013. By making a donation of at least $5 to York Habitat, customers receive a discount equal to the sales tax on their purchase.  This is a 6 percent discount off the lowest sale prices.
