FLOS Presents Two Designs for Collection by Ronan Bouroullec

FLOS presents two new complementary designs by Ronan Bouroullec for Flos’ decorative collection, Luce Sferica and Luce Cilindrica. Made of borosilicate glass stretched over polished aluminum, these two suspension lights are studies in horizontal beauty, offering maximum transparency, lightness, and resistance at the same time.
“Luce Sferica is a lamp that seeks delicacy and the beauty of simplicity, like raindrops clinging to a thread or a soap bubble blown by a child. On the synthetic base of the extruded aluminum, mouth-blown glass spheres glide, as if a bubble were to rest on a thread. Here, it is softness, magic, and technical sophistication that prevail. An object of great technical precision that expresses delicate beauty and poetry, more than synthetic mechanics,” said Ronan Bouroullec
Using technique to create magic and refinement
A sculptural modular suspension lamp, Luce Sferica by Ronan Bouroullec combines the poetic beauty of a handcrafted product with an industrial, functional spirit. It is a design that seeks to capture a fleeting moment: raindrops resting on a wire or the ephemeral presence of soap bubbles blown by a child, crystallizing time and the hypnotic alchemy of simple, timeless play. The result is a luminous body that is light, delicate, ethereal, and quietly magical. It is an ode to the beauty of the simplest things in life.
The lamp is composed of a highly technical horizontal body in polished extruded aluminum, which houses two LED strips: one emitting light upwards, the other downwards. At one end of the bar is an innovative touch dimmer that allows users to select upward or downward light emission – or both – and to dim each output independently.
The lamp body is encased in a series of light, transparent glass spheres of equal diameter (approximately 180 mm), crafted using the refined, centuries-old technique of glass blowing. The central spheres feature two through-holes, while the end spheres have only one opening, oriented toward the adjacent sphere. Their opposite side is closed by a flat surface that aligns with the end of the lighting module. The spheres are separated by traditional spacers, which accommodate the minor variations in diameter that naturally occur in artisanal glass production.
Atmospheres and compositional possibilities
Luce Sferica is a modular lamp available in three lengths (S1, S2, and S3), ranging from approximately 1.5 to 2.5 meters. It emits a diffused light that is simultaneously efficient, delicate, and gentle, ideal for illuminating large tables in private homes and hospitality settings, as well as museum spaces and architectural interiors. When installed in multiple parallel rows, it creates a scenographic, almost magical effect. Luce Sferica integrates elegantly and harmoniously into the most diverse contexts with a delicate and refined presence that fully expresses the poetic sensibility and aesthetic research of the designer.
Bouroullec comments, “This lamp originates from the Luce Orizzontale project, a lamp I initially designed for the entrance of the Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Foundation in relation to Tadao Ando's architectural project. Made for this location in collaboration with Flos, we later decided to produce it industrially.
Luce Cilindrica incorporates the technical elements of this first project but offers extremely lightweight borosilicate glass elements, in contrast to the solid cast glass of Luce Orizzontale.
This new complementary proposal provides a different perspective, an almost unreal delicacy of glass elements, a presence that is almost magical, on the brink of disappearance.” Ronan Bouroullec
The same refined magic of Luce Sferica can be found in a complementary variant proposed by Ronan Bouroullec, called Luce Cilindrica. The technology behind the project is identical, but instead of spheres, here the lamp is composed of ethereal modules with a cylindrical geometry. Made of borosilicate glass, they offer maximum transparency, lightness and resistance at the same time.
