Fast Fact: Big Counties Draw Residents from Small Counties

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 Population Estimates Report shows a population increase of over 2.2 million between 2015 and 2016, yet almost half of the U.S. counties downsized in population—a majority occurring in small and medium size counties.

Over the course of a year, 450 small counties lost over one percent of their residents—Baltimore County, M.D. topping the list with 1.08 percent. 54.1 percent of small counties lost residents compared to 82.5 percent of big counties growing in size.

Big counties in Texas and other southern states continue their growth as population gains reached over four percent from 2015 to 2016.
