Ashley Furniture said it will donate more than $1 million worth of mattresses to the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
The company said the donation involves about 4,700 mattresses that will be delivered to victims in 70 cities beginning this week.
The effort is being done in partnership with the Ashley Furniture HomeStore on the island, which is operated by family-owned company Empresas Berríos. The U.S. Army National Guard will lead the caravan of Ashley Furniture HomeStore-Berríos trucks across the island.
“The images from Hurricane Maria were devastating to see. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with the victims as they rebuild their communities,” said Todd Wanek, president and CEO of Ashley Furniture Inds. “Ashley is committed to supporting the communities in which we have a presence, and we hope this donation will aid the people of Puerto Rico.”
The Berríos family opened two Ashley Furniture HomeStores in Hatillo and Cupey, Puerto Rico in November. As the largest furniture retailer on the island, the Berríos family plans to open three more Ashley Furniture HomeStores in 2018.
“The residents of this island have supported us from the beginning and have watched us grow as a company,” said Noel Berríos, owner and vice president of Mueblerías Berríos. “It is now our turn to support them in this difficult time of rebuilding our home - Puerto Rico. Ashley Furniture and Berríos share the same values and the result of that is this great contribution.”
In September of last year, Ashley Furniture made furniture donations with a retail value of over $2 million to relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida
