As the percentage of Americans moving remains at historically low levels, data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that those who do move generally don’t move very far from their original residence.
The data showed that 64% of movers stayed within the same metropolitan area in 2016, while 16.7% moved from one metro are to another.
In addition, only 3.7% of movers left a metro area to move to a smaller town or rural area. By contrast, 27.3% of movers living in rural areas or small towns moved to a metro area.
