Furniture Library Unveils Sculpture Honoring Shelba Cornelison

The Bienenstock Furniture Library in downtown High Point, N.C., has unveiled a kinetic sculpture honoring industry veteran Shelba Cornelison, a former editor of Furniture World who has been attending the High Point Market for more than 60 years.

Cornelison was editor of Furniture World from 1959 to 1981 when the magazine had an office on the first floor of what is now the International Home Furnishings Center. After leaving Furniture World, she began a second successful career in advertising, first at shelter publication Southern Accents and later at Bridge for Design, a resource for interior designers.

She also has been a member of the Bienenstock Furniture Library board of directors for 25 years.

“Shelba is a whirlwind of energy with a bright and cheery disposition,” said Charlie Sutton, chairman emeritus of the board. “This kinetic and colorful sculpture reflects her personality and will be a permanent reminder of the contributions she has made not only to the library but to the home furnishings industry.”

The sculpture, was designed and created by Morganton, N.C., native John Ross. It completes the Pat Plaxico Gardens at the Bienenstock Furniture Library.  Plaxico is a nationally recognized interior designer who envisioned this space as an oasis of beauty and respite.

“It is an honor to celebrate the contributions of Shelba Cornelison,” said Plaxico. “She is the epitome of those people who work quietly behind the scenes, without whom nothing can be accomplished.”
