FastFact: Spending on Durable Goods Shows Uptick Since ‘09

Despite the increasing burden of healthcare, Americans have steadily increased their share of spending on durable goods, which include home furnishings, since 2009, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The data shows that consumer spending on services grew from 2000 to 2009 as durable goods lost ground, but durable goods have rebounded since the Great Recession ended.

Since 2009, spending on durable goods has seen the largest increase, as a percent of total consumption, while non-durables have declined as a percent of total consumption.
