FastFact: Mobility Rates Continue to Drop as Fewer Americans Move
August 14,
2017 by Larry Thomas in Economic News, Industry
A record low 11.2% of Americans moved to a new residence from 2015 to 2016, continuing a steady decline in mobility rates that has been evident since the 1950s, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The data showed the vast majority of movers – some 67.3% -- were under age 35, while 23% of all movers were age 20 to 24.
Not surprisingly, the percentage of movers declined significantly with age. For example, less than 4% of adults over age 55 moved last year, according to the Census Bureau.
