Southern California retailer Jerome’s Furniture has donated more than $2,500 worth of furniture to Operation Homefront’s Transitional Housing Village in San Diego.
The transitional housing program is designed to give wounded veterans and their families a rent-free, utility-free, furnished apartment while they’re transitioning to civilian life.
The Operation Homefront Village in San Diego primarily serves Balboa Hospital and Camp Pendleton.
“We’re proud to do our part to support those who’ve sacrificed so much for us,” said Jerry Navarra, chairman of Jerome’s Furniture. “There’s a special place in our family’s heart for military personnel and their loved ones that serve along with them. Operation Homefront is there for them, and so are we.”
Included in the retailer’s donation were three sofas, two dining room sets, three dressers, and a twin bed. The company also agreed to replace the sofas when the ones provided become worn
“Many of our young veterans are at risk of becoming homeless if programs are not put in place to help them transition back into civilian life while keeping some stability for their families,” said Jack Chirrick, senior director of Operation Homefront. “That is why Operation Homefront transitional housing villages exist in San Diego, San Antonio, Texas, and Gaithersburg, Maryland. We are grateful for Jerome’s support to our mission of building strong, stable, and secure military families.”
Chirrick said wounded veterans must vacate military housing immediately after discharge, but before they begin receiving Veterans Administration benefits. As a result, their income is typically 50% to 75% lower than when they were on active duty, and their spouse often needs to stop working outside the home to care for the veteran.
The program includes case management and customized transition plans, one-on-one financial planning, employment coaching, medical referrals, and a support network. Upon completion of the program, the transitioning veterans should have VA benefits in place, debt significantly reduced and emergency savings secured.
