Atlanta-based retailer Havertys (NYSE: HVT) has donated money to three Baton Rouge, La.-area charities, fulfilling a pledge to earmark a percentage of 2016 sales at its Baton Rouge store to help victims of a devastating August flood.
The retailer said the money went to The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul Society in Baton Rouge, and the United Way of Baton Rouge’s flood victim fund.
That was in addition to the $10,000 the retailer donated to the American Red Cross in September.
“We want to do what we can to help the people of Baton Rouge rebuild from the devastating floods,” said Clarence Smith, chairman, president and CEO. “It’s important to us to support the organizations that Baton Rouge counts on for aid and assistance.”
While the Baton Rouge Havertys location escaped flood damage, more than half the store’s associates and families faced daunting damage and repairs, said Smith.
More than 100,000 homes flooded as a result of mid-August storms, and recovery was hampered by additional storms throughout the month. The Louisiana flood of 2016 put tens of thousands of acres underwater across the state.
“The work these organizations do is critical, and we are proud to support their efforts to help our community recover,” said Zack Mattson, store manager for the Havertys location on Airline Highway in Baton Rouge.
