Mississippi Colleges Launch Training Program for Furniture Workers

Mississippi State University’s Franklin Furniture Institute has partnered with two community colleges and several other groups to form the Furniture Academy, a manufacturing skills certification program aimed at easing the labor shortage faced by many Mississippi upholstery producers.

The first 28-hour program is set to begin Feb. 13, and officials hope to sign up 300 people for the initial offering.

The academy’s $250 fee is being waived for the first 300 attendees, thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Development Authority.

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive priority interviews from participating manufacturers and a higher starting wage.

Manufacturers participating in the initial program are H.M Richards, Kevin Charles Upholstery, HomeStretch, Max Home and Southern Motion.

In addition to the Franklin Furniture Institute, other partners in the program are Itawamba Community College, Northeast Mississippi Community College, the Community Development Foundation, and the Three Rivers Planning and Development District.
