A new report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development shows that new single-family homes averaged 2,540 square feet in 2015, up from 2,060 feet in 2000.
The increase occurred despite the 2009 housing market collapse.
The report showed that only 37% of new homes built in 2002 were more than 2,400 square feet. But by 2015, 56% of new houses were at least that size.
