Aided by “robust” sales around major holidays, Havertys (HVT) said sales increased 0.8% to $211.7 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30.
In a preliminary report released Friday, the retailer said comparable-store sales rose 1.2%, while total written sales, which include merchandise ordered but not delivered, increased 2.6%.
“Our increase in written business during the third quarter was driven by robust results around the major holidays and an ebbing during the remaining periods,” said Clarence Smith, chairman, president and CEO. “The occasional, dining, accessories, and upholstery product categories led the year over year sales increases for the third quarter.
“Our in-home designers have helped increase sales of custom upholstery, rugs and other accessories, building larger sales tickets and significantly improving opportunities for repeat and referral business.”
For the nine months ended Sept. 30, sales rose 2% to $601 million.
The 122-store chain will release complete financial results for the quarter on Oct. 31.
