Meadoff Award Goes to Virginia Cory at GMFA Golf Outing

The Meadoff Memorial Award for Sportsmanship is one of the most coveted Awards in our Industry, since it is the "person" not a position or title being recognized.

Initiated by the late Hal Meadoff in honor of his father A.S. Meadoff in 1942, the award has been continued by Hal's family. Sportsmanship, as defined by this award, does not signify skill or performance. It has to do with a person's sense of fair play and fair-mindedness. Personal relationships in the industry, social consciousness and support of humane and philanthropic causes are attributes carefully considered by the awards committee. Former recipients meet each year to review and choose an individual to receive this honor.

In 2016 the award was presented to Virginia Cory by Jordan Greenberg, President of Apropos, the grandson of Hal Meadoff. Jordan explained the history and significance of the Award, mentioning Virginia’s selfless nature and years of service to the industry.

“Virginia was a natural choice for the Meadoff Award this year,” said Andy Gans, GMFA’s President. “She has given her time freely as a volunteer for GMFA, for other industry events and charities such as City of Hope the Cory family support. She’s an exemplar of the ‘Cory Way’ as well as he spirit of the Meadoff Award.”

GMFA’s golf outing raised $15,000 for the Dean Michael Clarizio Cancer Foundation (dmccf.com) that helps cancer victims and their families to cover living expenses. Chris Clarizio of Klaussner presented $5,000 checks to: the family of eight-year-old Ava Gottlieb; the family of Peter Connors who has battled cancer for five years; and James Tiernan, a high school senior who was diagnosed with cancer in eighth grade.
