Home furnishings retailer Ikea has confirmed it will debut its newest store in Oak Creek, Wisconsin in the summer of 2018, company executives said late last week.
“Ikea opened its first U.S. store in 1955 in suburban Philadelphia, and since then we have grown and prospered on both coasts,” company spokesman Joseph Roth said. “Now with 41 store in the U.S., mostly in the east and in the west, we are focused on filling in the middle.”
The new store from the Swedish-based retailer will be located on 29 acres of land near Drexel Avenue between 27th Street and Interstate 94. It will be a single-level store with 295,000 square feet of shopping space and 1,200 parking spots. Development of the store will begin in spring 2017 and will ultimately employ about 250 people, executives said.
Ikea has long considered a Wisconsin location. The closest store to Milwaukee is in Schaumburg, Illinois, about 80 miles to the south. Ikea is also building stores in Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio scheduled to open next year.
