Commerce: Retail Sales Up 0.2%

Retail sales kicked off 2016 with a 0.2 percent increase for January over December, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.

Unfortunately, furniture retailers didn’t fare as well from month to month posting a 0.5 percent drop. Compared to January 2015, home furnishings retailers showed a hefty 4 percent increase last month.

The overall figure shows consumers buying new cars, groceries and a growing penchant for shopping online.

December sales were revised up to show a 0.2 percent gain instead of the previously reported 0.1 percent drop. Sales dropped for retailers selling sporting goods, books, music and other hobby items.
