RH Signs Lease for San Francisco Store

Lifestyle retailer Restoration Hardware (NYSE: RH) has signed a lease for a space in a San Francisco historic building.

The retailer will operate a 60,000-square-foot store at San Francisco’s Pier 70.

Historic Pier 70 is being rehabilitated and includes eight buildings dating from 1885. The buildings once housed headquarters for Union Ironworks and later Bethlehem Steel.

slated to open in 2017, RH San Francisco, The Gallery at the Historic Bethlehem Steel Building will be prominently situated at Illinois and 20th Streets. The retailer will occupy the Bethlehem Steel building, which was built in 1917 and designed in the Classical Revival style by architect Frederick H. Meyer.

The building features five floors.

“With great admiration and respect for its architectural heritage, we could not be more honored to reestablish this historic landmark’s relevance,” said Gary Friedman, RH chairman and CEO. “This is a rare opportunity to help render the whole neighborhood more valuable, reenergizing our surroundings and creating a lasting gift to our hometown.”

The Union Iron Works Historic District at Pier 70 is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 66-acre district was determined to be nationally significant for its association with Union Iron Works, later Bethlehem Steel, as pioneers in establishing the U.S. steel shipbuilding industry, as well as the site’s architecture representing the period from 1884 to 1945.
