Consumer confidence inched up for the fourth consecutive month this month, according to the the University of Michigan’s most recent Surveys of Consumers.
Sentiment climbed to 93.3 from 92.6 in the survey’s preliminary January reading.
The current conditions gauge rose 3 points to 108.1, and the future expectations reading was 85.7, also a 3-point increase.
“Consumer optimism is now dependent on the continuation o an extraordinarily low inflation rate,” said Richard Curtin, chief economist for the survey. “Rather than welcoming a rising inflation rate as a signal of a strengthening economy, consumers are now more likely to reduce the pace of their spending and thus act to erase the Fed's rationale for higher interest rates.”
Curtin said the data indicates personal consumption expenditures will climb 2.8 percent this year.
