Furniture Sales Climb 0.9%

Sales at furniture stores climbed 0.9 percent last month despite the slide in overall retail sales.
Retail sales dropped 0.1 percent for the month of December, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. Excluding automobiles and gasoline, sales remained unchanged.
Sales for clothing retailers dropped 0.9 percent and 1 percent at general merchandise stores. Sales were also down at electronics and appliance stores, as well as food and beverage retailers.
Sporting goods stores fell in step with furniture retailers and posted a 0.9 percent increase. Online sales were up 0.3 percent.
