FastFact: Number of Renters Climb

Since 2009, the number of people renting instead of buying a home has increased among all ages, marital status and income level.
In the five-year time frame between 2009 and 2014, every age group posted an increase in renters. Each segment under the age of 55, posted double-digit decreases in the number of homes owned.
While overall total households grew 3.2 percent; however, owner-occupied units dropped 1.3 percent while apartment and home rentals climbed 11.4 percent.
The largest home owner segment continues to be the 65-and-over set, and the group 35 and under is the largest rental group.
