UMich: Consumer Sentiment Continues Climb

Consumer sentiment is on the rise, and according to the University of Michigan’s final consumer sentiment for December the index posted a 0.8 point increase to 92.6.

The preliminary reading for December was 91.8. The index is at its highest level since July and is nearly equal to the 2015 average of 92.9, which is the highest since 2004.

“All of the improvement was in how consumers evaluated current economic conditions,” said Richard Curtin, chief economist for the survey. “The December gain was largely due to lower inflation, which bolstered real incomes and brightened buying plans for household durables. Indeed, there have been only three surveys in more than the past half century in which a higher proportion mentioned the availability of price discounts for durables. Overall, the data point toward gains of 2.8 percent in real personal consumption expenditures during 2016.”
