Consumer sentiment climbed for a third straight month, as measured by the University of Michigan confidence index.
The index hit 91.8, up 0.5 point, in the preliminary December reading.
The University of Michigan survey found “persistent strength” in buying plans and assessments of personal finances, the survey director said, but views of the national economy in the year ahead darkened.
All of December’s gain was among households with incomes in the lower two-thirds. It took the 2015 average to 92.9, the highest since 2004.
Michigan forecasts consumer spending will increase 2.8 percent next year.
